LABC PRESIDENT’S  MESSAGE:

As the school year comes to a close I want to thank all the parents who helped the Lafayette Athletic Booster Club this year by joining the association and supporting the things we do to help their children.  I want to thank those on the board who have spent their time to help the club run smoothly and bring in the funds needed to support our athletes. Thanks to Sue Morrison for her efforts to bring in family memberships, Margaret Bacon for her suggestions and communicating the minutes, Patti Banks for running concessions for both football games and wrestling matches, Selene Pinkett for all her work on the golf tournament, Bee Dente for her hours of work with the treasurer position, and, of course, Dan Barner who spends countless hours coming up with ways to spend all the money!  Thanks goes out to all the athletes who give us the enjoyment and pride that comes with watching Ram sports.

AD’s CORNER: by Dan Barner: Another Valedictorian, Another Bay Rivers District All Sports Championship and Another VHSL State Champ Ends The Bittersweet Spring Of 2008.   As he walked up to accept his medal of honor for being the senior class Valedictorian, Brent Shawcross, a member of our state runner-up swimming team, became the fifth former Ram Athlete in the past eight years to earn the honor of being the number one student in the senior class.  During that same eight year period a former Ram athlete has also earned the title of Salutatorian four times.  Brent, a National Honor Society member, will attend Notre Dame this fall hoping to become a commissioned officer in the Untied State Navy.  He was also named the 32nd winner of the covenant Gordy Tutman award.  This award is voted on by the Lafayette Coaches and given to the most outstanding senior student athlete.  As a member of our Scholastic Bowl team Brent also helped Lafayette to its first ever Bay Rivers District VHSL Academic-Activities Championship.  He along with all of our Academic-Activities participants helped our Rams finished as the number eight school in the state in Academic-Activities and we were the only school in Bay Rivers District and Region 1 to finish in the top 10 in the state’s final standings. This spring saw Tori Ford become only the eighth female in the history of the VHSL to win back to back state championships in Tennis. Tori, a Syracuse University recruit and another National Honor Society member finished her Lafayette career with the most wins in the school’s history in tennis.  Also this spring eight other athletes earned All-state honors.  They were Hannah Lyerly, Allyn Potts, Sara Abrahams, Justin Wolfe and Drake Kuhn in Soccer and Chelsea LeHew, Damien Brown and Garrick Piggott in Outdoor Track. On the team front of our eight spring teams of 2008, three won Bay Rivers District Championships (Girls Soccer, Girls Tennis and Boys Track) and all finished in the top half of the final district standings.  This success coupled with that of our fall and winter teams propelled LHS to its sixth straight Bay Rivers District All Sports Championship.  It also marked the eighth time in the past nine years that our Rams have won this award.  During the 11 years of being a member of the Bay Rivers District, our Rams have won the overall championship eight times and finished second the other three years.

A quick final tally of our spring sports season shows that our Rams…

  • Won three of the eight Bay Rivers Championships.  We were champs in

    Girls Soccer, Girls Tennis &

                Boys Outdoor Track

  • Six of our teams finished in the top four of the district.

          The three district champions plus

Girls Track & Boys Tennis both

finished in 3rd place and our Boys Soccer team finished in 4th place.

  • Four Teams finished in the top four in Region 1.

      Girls Soccer, Girls Tennis and

                  Boys and Girls Outdoor Track

  • Our spring teams won 72% of all their games this spring.
  • 72% of our spring athletes earned a 3.0 or higher GPA during the spring sports season.
  • 50 or 23% of our spring athletes earned some type of post season honors and 80% of these athletes earned a 3.0 GPA during the season.
  • Nine of our athletes won All-State honors and seven of the nine are 3.0 GPA or higher students.
  • Our Athletes completed over 300 hours of Community Service Projects.

However, with all the success that we experienced this spring the one thing that we did not accomplish is winning a Region 1 Championship. In fact, with all the success that we have enjoyed the past two years, our Rams have not won one Region 1 Championship in either year. Like last year I thought that we had a number of teams that were very capable of winning a Regional Championship but for one reason or another we just came up short on a number of occasions.  This spring two of our teams, Girls Tennis and Soccer, suffered two of the most heartbreaking defeats in our 11 years in “AA” in the Region 1 Championship games. Our Girls Tennis team, just like last year, went undefeated through the Bay Rivers District regular season only to lose to a district opponent in the Region 1 finals.  Since tennis is the only sport, other than football, that does not send the region runner-up on to the state competition, our Lady Rams ended their very successful season in an agonizing fashion.  The very next day our Girls Soccer team lost to Courtland in the Regional Championship game.  After playing to a 0 to 0 tie for 100 minutes through regulation and four overtimes Courtland won 3 to 2 on free kicks.  The next week our Lady Rams lost another tough game in the state quarter finals to Broad Run 2 to 1 to end our season.  Broad Run and Courtland ended up playing in the state championship game in which Broad Run won.  The two heartbreaking defeats suffered by our Girls Tennis and Soccer Teams ending the spring sports season.  It was a season filled with so many exciting moments and so many big wins but still one that also had such a bittersweet ending.

2007-2008 ~ AS USUAL JUST ANOTHER OUTSTANDING YEAR FOR THE LAFAYETTE RAMS!!!

Year after year, season after season, what our Rams accomplish is truly amazing.  In fact, I think that I can safely say that during the 11 years that we have been in the Bay Rivers District only “AA” schools like Jamestown, Blacksburg, Western Albemarle, and a very few others can match our success across the board year after year. It has become so customary to talk about all the success accumulated by our Rams Athletes and their teams that, unfortunately, it has unfairly come to the point that the many accomplishments of each new group is become less and less impressive with each passing year. Before continuing, there is one thing that I want to make very clear.  The reason why we have had so much success year after year is because of the overall quality of all the athletes that we have here at LHS. Obviously, one of the reasons is because we have such a large number of outstanding athletes in each sports season who earn post some type of post season honors.  However, that is only part of the equation. The other big reason for our success is due to the high quality of play by our athletes who do not win any such post season honors.  These are the Ram athletes who provide the high octane fuel that make our winning engines run.  Simply put, Lafayette Athletes has become one of the “AA” powers in the state because we have so many hard working and dedicated athletes who know how to get the job done. They are the BEST!  For example, during the 2007-2008 school year 45 of our Rams earned the honors of being named to an All-State Team and 97 of our 425 athletes made some type of post season honors. Another major accomplishment was that our 22 varsity teams won amazing 76% of all of the games that they played in.  Think about that for a moment. Every time a Lafayette team played a game, our Rams won three out of four times. This year our Rams won one State Championship in Girls Swimming & Diving, and had one State runner-up in Boys Swimming & Diving. We won or tied for first place in nine of the Bay Rivers District’s 22 sports championships.  Of our 22 sports teams, all finished their season in the upper half of the district final standings.  This is the first time that this has ever happen.  In fact, with the conclusion of the spring season Lafayette has seen all of its teams in a season finish in the upper half of the final district standings 17 times out of the 33 sports season that we have participated in the Bay Rivers District. What makes this number stand out is that only three other schools in the district have ever accomplished this feat.  Grafton has done it six times, Tabb five times and Jamestown once. Again, all of this success led our Rams to our sixth straight, and eighth during the past nine years, Bay Rivers District All Sports Championship. Great job Rams!!!

ACADEMICS + CITIZENSHIP = THE LAFAYETTE RAMS.  It was another really good year for our athletes academically.  In fact this year was better academically for our athletes than most of the previous 10 years that were have been in the VHSL “AA” classification.  Also, using the percentage of athletes who earned a 3.0 GPA, this year our athletes again proved the hypothesis that athletes do better academically during their sports season than they do overall.  This year of our 425 athletes, 61% end the school year with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better. Using the 3.0 GPA as a barometer, during the three sports seasons this year approximately 70% of our athletes earned a 3.0 GPA bettering their year overall average. This is an example of what most coaches and athletic administrators already believe. That is that most often our athletes do better academically during their sports season than they do during their off season. Another example of how well our athletes do academically is with this year’s National Honor Society inductees.  Of the 48 new inductees this year 31 of them are Ram athletes. Outside of school our Rams, as they do each year, completed over 1200 hours of community service and raised several  thousand dollars for people in need. In the area of leadership almost 80%, 23 out of 29, of our Student Government elected officers this past year were LHS athletes.  In the areas of academics, behavior and school attendance (please see the attached Athletic-Academic Report Card) our athletes, as they do each year, faired much better than the non-athletes of the school.  For example, 61% of our athletes have earned a 3.0 or higher GPA compared to only 34% of the non-athletes.  Almost one in ten of our athletes have earned a GPA of 4.0 or higher while only 4% of the non-athletes can make such a claim.  At the bottom of the GPA scale less than 3% of our athletes have under a 1.5 GPA, compared to 17% of the non-athletes. Statistically for the year, our athletes did slightly better than the norm of other years making this year one of our best years academically for our athletes.  Back to the positive accomplishments of the year, there were 79 students in the school who ended the year with a GPA of 4.0 or higher of which 45 were athletes. Considering that 36% of the students in the school are athletes and that 57% of the 4.0 students are athletes you can see that this is another area where statistically our athletes have a much higher percentage of students at the top of the academic scale than do the non-athletes.  The same higher percentage holds true for this year’s senior class where 12 of the top 25 students are athletes. Of the 44 athletes whose years end overall GPA was a 4.0 or higher, 10 were seniors.  We congratulate these 10 seniors for earning an ‘A’ average during their four years at LHS.  Of the these 10, two won All-State Honors while three others earned All-District Honors.  The following is a listing of these student/athletes and their sport in which they earned All-State, in parentheses, and any other sport that they played for at least one year. The two All-State senior student/athletes who earned a 4.0 or higher are: Chelsea Jensen (Field Hockey & Swimming) and Paige Boyer (Swimming). The three All-District 4.0 senior student/athletes are: Megan Wine (volleyball),  Ann Goode (Tennis) and Taryn Johnson (indoor track and she played field hockey) The other five seniors who were 4.0 student/athletes during their four year stay at LHS and the sports they participated in are: Audrey Glasebrook  (cross country), Stephanie Burnette (cheerleading). Brooke Rogers (volleyball), Avery Greenquist (soccer) and Brent Shawcross (swimming).

IMPROVEMENT IS NEEDED: With all of the great accomplishment for the 2007-2008 school year there were some areas were some of our athletes need to show immediate improvement. Two areas where our athletes did not do as well as usual were attendance and suspensions. For the year  19% of our athletes missed more than 10 days of school which was much better than the 45% of our non-athletes but still too high as compared to previous years. In a related area we had many more athletes tardy to class than in the past.  This year we had many athletes late for class as many as 30, 40, 50 and even 60 times during the year.  I hope that you would agree that a message of letting our athletes think that it is ok to be late would be something that we do not want.  In the area of In or Out of School Suspensions, both our athletes and non-athletes had a very bad year.  This year 9% of our athletes, slightly better than our worst year of 2006-2007 but much higher than usual, were given either in or out of school suspension.  Even though the non-athletes also had a bad year as 19% were suspended, the 9% of athletes being suspended is something that is simply unacceptable.  Compounding this problem of behavior, nine of our athletes were ejected from a game this year which is by far our most ever in one year.  As stake holder in helping to secure a bright future for our athletes, we as parents, coaches and  administrators must work together to teach our athletes that those things such as bad behavior and poor attendance is something that is not acceptable.  We want all of our athletes to learn that good behavior and a good attendance record are very important to their future. Remember that although winning in the classroom and on the field is an important part of our athletic philosophy, many other factors are just as important.  Good behavior and good attendance are two of those other factors.  Because of this unusual trend of some poor decision making by our athletes, we will definitely spend more time addressing this issue starting this fall.  I know that by working together we can fix this.    There you have it. Just like all the other years, the final assessment for our 2007-2008 Rams is simple. Except for a few bumps, our athletes have shown again that they are the best kids in the school during the best things. Correction, we have the best kids in any school during the best things.  Great Job Rams!

RAM ATHLETES SHOWING THEIR MANY TALENTS:  Besides showing what outstanding student/athletes they are on the field and in the classroom there are many other areas in which our Rams show their many talents this year.   With help from many of our athletes Lafayette for the first time won the overall all Bay Rivers District VHSL Academic/Activities Championship.  It was also the first time that a school in the Bay Rivers District won both the All Sports and All Academic/Activities Championship in the same year.  Our Academic/Activities teams which include: One-Act-Play, Scholastic Bowl, Debate, Forensics, Yearbook, Newspaper and Literary Magazine finished the year just like our athletic teams in that all  of these teams finished their season in the upper half the district’s final standings.  Our Academic/Activities teams also finished the year as the number eight school in the VHSL state final rankings.  Leading this charge was Taylor Morgan (basketball) and Max Hinders (golf and tennis), who both won All-State Theater honors, as they led Lafayette to the District Championship and a third place finish in the VHSL in the One-Act-Play competition.  However, the place where so many of our athletes demonstrated their versatility was in our schools theater production of the nostalgic classic, Grease.  Eleven of the 15 leading cast members and a host of the student production team were Lafayette athletes.   In all 12 of our 22 sports teams had at least one representative as a member of the cast or production team.  Both Taylor and Max were two of the main cast members along with Kristen Malone (volleyball), Luke Hyland (soccer), Hayley Trull (cheerleading), Brooke Hummel (field Hockey), Lindsay Chuckney (field hockey), John Mills (football), Alison Hummel (field hockey), Alex Madison (football), Chelsea Perkins (field hockey).  Another 17 of our athletes were members of the production team that made the play run so smoothly. They were: William Burks, Shaina Cooper, Audrey Glasebrook, Cori Leek, Christine Singleton, Elyse Teeney, Matt Baumler, Stephanie Burnette, Matt Weiser, Ryan Willard, Eric Mease, Tucker Coleman, Garrick Piggott, Tim Womble, Deuce Bigelow, Brittni Maurer and Chas Marley.  The play was truly outstanding and once again it showed that the Lafayette athletes can do it all.

SPORTSMANSHIP:  Sportsmanship is one of the cornerstones of our athletic program. Each sports season, one athlete from each team is selected by their peers as the winner of the Lafayette Sportsmanship-Integrity-School Spirit Award. This is the most prestigious award given to our athletes.  This spring winners are: Girls Outdoor Track: Heather Dela Cruz, Boys Outdoor Track:  Dexter Crew, Girls Soccer: Hannah Lyerly, Boys Soccer: Kendal Pressey, Girls Tennis: Tori Ford, Boys Tennis: Stephen Hellier, Softball: Jenny Carroll, and Baseball: Tyler Cobb. Congratulation to these eight athletes for their outstanding display of the true meaning of what an athlete should be.

SPRING MILESTONES:

Tori Ford: Tori, a senior, became the first tennis player in the history of LHS to not only win one but two VHSL State Single Championship.  She was also the Bay Rivers District and Region 1 Champion. Damien Brown: Damien, a senior, made All-State for the second year in Outdoor Track. This spring Damien was the VHSL State runner-up in the shot put event.  Damien was also All-Sate in Indoor Track. Hannah Lyerly: Hannah, a senior, was named to the All-State Soccer team. Hannah was also an All-State performer in Field Hockey last fall. FOUR GREAT YEARS:  When our seniors of 2008 said their final goodbyes, they took with them four very successful and exciting athletic years. Just like many of the senior classes before them, what they accomplished during their short stay at LHS was truly amazing.  For example, winning 74% of all the games that they played in is just truly an outstanding feat.  Every tax paying person in this community who has supported these student/athletes should take pride in knowing that their money was well spent on such a great bunch of kids.   I know that I will really miss their smiling faces and their friendly personalities as much as all the success that they brought to Lafayette.  The class of 2008 is one of the reasons why I always say year after year, “It is great to be a Lafayette Ram!”

During their four years they:

  • Won 74% of their 1287 games played
  • Won six State Championships

SPECIAL SENIOR AWARDS: At the Senior Awards Assembly and at the Spring Awards Ceremony, we announced the winners of our major Senior Athletic Awards.  The Gordie Tutman Award, which is presented by the LHS coaching staff to the outstanding senior scholar/athlete, was given to Brent Shawcross.  For winning this award Brent received a $500 scholarship from the Athletic Booster Club. As mention above Brent will attend Notre Dame this fall. The Principal’s Award which is voted upon by the entire Lafayette faculty is given to the most outstanding Male and Female Athlete of the Year.  Hannah Lyerly was named the Female Athlete of the year.  During Hannah’s four years at LHS, she won All-District, All Region 1 and All-Sate honors in  Field Hockey and Soccer.  Hannah received a scholarship in Field Hockey from VCU.  The Male Athlete award was given to Matt Mares. Matt was the first football player in the history of LHS to be named first team All-District, All-Region 1 and All-State for three straight years.  Matt also earned All-District honors twice in Soccer and was a starter for out basketball team. Matt will play football at James Madison University this fall.  Both Hannah and Matt received a $500 scholarship from the Athletic Booster Club.  The winners of the Cherished Angels Scholarship were Tori Ford and TJ Ptachick.  As mentioned above, Tori, a two time state champion, won more tennis matches than any other tennis player in the history of Lafayette tennis. She also is Lafayette’s only singles state champion in tennis.  Tori will play tennis next year at Syracuse University. TJ was an All-State football player and was voted the title of the Bay Rivers District and Region 1 Defensive Player of the year.  TJ will follow his father’s foot steps and play football next fall at The College of William and Mary. THREE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN LHS ATHLETICS:  Between our Booster Club and the School Division we have in place some very key people to make our athletes the best.  I can think of no other school division in this area that has these same positions.  Keven Jones:  Coach Jones is also our academic advisor for all of our athletes.  Please, if your child is ever in need of academic help; call Coach Jones at 565-4236. Over the years he has helped so many of our athletes become more responsible teenagers and better students academically. Please do not hesitate to take advantage of the help that Coach Jones can provide.  Dan Gotthardt: Coach Gotthardt is our full time certified athletic trainer.  If your athlete is having some type of injury related problem or if you just need some information, please call Coach Gotthardt at 565-4281. Our Athletic Training room is one of the very best around and is very well equipped thanks to the efforts of our Booster Club. If Coach Gotthardt cannot solve your child’s injury problem, he will point you in the right direction to get the necessary medical help.  Paul Wheeler: Coach Wheeler, who is our football coach, is also a nationally certified Strength Training Coach.  Besides the benefits that strength training has on an athlete’s performance on the playing surface, it has just as much or more positive effect on their self-esteem and appearance.  Please call Coach Wheeler at 565-4253 to get more information.  He runs a great strength and conditioning program and it can surely help your young athlete become a stronger and more physically fit person.
